MICRODERMABRASION

Are You a Candidate For Microdermabrasion?

The best candidates for microdermabrasion are individuals with fine lines and wrinkles, bumpy thickened skin, blotchy skin, enlarged pores, irregular skin texture, blemishes, sun-damaged skin and acne prone skin. Microdermabrasion is not recommended for those who have active keloids, undiagnosed lesions, recent herpes outbreaks, warts, severe acne, active rosacea, unstable diabetes or auto-immune system disorders. If our aesthetician feels you need a dermatologist to address any of these conditions, she can consult with Dr. Ladd, often on the same day, for the usual office visit fee. This will allow you to safely start you microdermabrasions once your condition is improved.

Does Microdermabrasion Hurt?

The level of discomfort you experience during your microdermabrasion varies by individual, but for the vast majority of patients it is minimal. Some patients complain of stinging a little around the eye area. Some patients have said it feels like someone is lightly rubbing a toothbrush on their skin. Our trained aesthetician will help to minimize your discomfort by starting you at a setting you can tolerate. Then as your collagen formation increases with each successive treatment you can tolerate higher settings to maximize your results. Each patient's skin is different and our aesthetician can customize the settings in your microdermabrasion program to meet your individual needs. Your skin may feel warm and have a pink appearance the first day or two. If the pinkness persists or is uncomfortable let your aesthetician know so she can adjust the settings accordingly for your next treatment.

What Can I Expect During a Treatment?

Treatments limited to the face typically last 20 to 30 minutes, but if your treatment includes the neck and upper chest area, it may last up to an hour. For best results, we recommend a course of microdermabrasions every 2 weeks for a total of 6 to 8 treatments. After that you can schedule maintenance treatments every month or so to keep the benefits you have achieved. The vast majority of our patients see and feel a significant difference after only one or two treatments, but schedule additional treatments to increase and maintain this improvement.

After The Treatment

A skin care regimen will be recommended to address your individual skin care needs prior to leaving our office. Usually the redness does not last more than a few hours after treatment. A sensation or warmth or sunburn will also resolve after a few hours. Your aesthetician will apply a healing moisturizer to re-hydrate the skin after your treatment to minimize your discomfort. Avoid direct sun exposure for 7 days after a treatment. This is very important as skin damage from the sun can darken your healing skin and reverse the positive rejuvenation you have gained from your microdermabrasion. We will recommend a sunscreen for your daily use to minimize your sun exposure. Exposure to UV radiation is one of the key factors in speeding the skin aging process. You should avoid skin care products containing AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids), glycolic Acid, lactic acid, citric acid, scrubs or other skin exfoliants for 72 hours both before and after your microdermabrasion. Your aesthetician will make recommendations for your make-up routine.

What Results Can I Expect After My Microdermabrasion?

You will be pleased to find your skin feeling more vibrant and healthy and when you touch it you will feel softer, smoother skin. Again, there is almost no recovery time, no discomfort and you can return to work immediately. A series of microdermabrasion treatments can help smooth fine lines and wrinkles, remove thickened skin areas due to the impact of environmental factors and reduce the appearance of blemishes caused by sun damage. Additionally, microdermabrasion improves the appearance of open pores by unclogging oily build-up and acne blemishes.

What Can't Microdermabrasion Do?

Please be advised, deeply pitted acne scars may require alternate treatments such as Chemical Peels, subcision and/or Restylane. Deeply pigmented areas may require a consultation regarding the proper products to use. Deeper wrinkles will respond best to Botox and/or Restylane depending on their location. Your aesthetician can let you know if your acne or other skin conditions will require dermatologic consultation with Dr. Ladd. Bear in mind that your best results are often achieved using a combination of Botox and  Restylane for a "mini-facelift" effect at a fraction of the cost of invasive surgeries that can take up to 4 weeks to recover from.
